The Community Learning Networks (CLN) Project Home Page

Project Objective

The main objective of the project is to make education and employment training possible for all adults of working age in the community through e-learning. (electronic learning)

Project Goal

The goal of the Community Learning Networks project is twofold:

One is to test the extent to which technology based training at the new, networked Community Learning Centre will aid members of the Attawapiskat First Nation.

The second goal is to increase the scope of learning opportunities within the community through Distance Education and electronic-learning.

By the end of the project, 150 adults of working age will be on a career path towards a skilled trade or profession who are eligible to work at the Victor Mine and/or in the local labour force.

What is e-learning and Distance Education?

Many colleges and universities have correspondence courses where you can ask your instructor questions over the Internet and even send in your assignments using this technology. For example, Contact North at http://www.contactnorth.ca is a provider of college programs to remote communities using Internet technology. You are able to email your teacher if you have questions and you can email your assignments. Tuition fees apply to all courses except Academic Upgrading offered during the day on the Contact North network. Secondary School credit courses can be accessed through the Independent Learning Centre website at http://www.ilc.org.

Ontario Learn at http://www.ontariolearn.com is a group of 22 colleges which offer college courses over the Internet or by correspondence. Canadian Virtual University at http://www.cvu-uvc.ca offers the same option for students who want to take university courses and live far away from a campus.

If you work during the day and you have family responsibilities, it can be difficult to go to college or university or even to finish High School. The CLN project is in place to provide information to adults about post-secondary and other life long learning opportunities that are available now via correspondence or the Internet. The project also identifies what skills are required by the local labour market and works to provide local learning opportunities so those needed skills can be developed here.
